THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN āMUNKIā 2LP - EXCLUSIVE - LTD. 500 - ULTRA CLEAR
LABEL: FUZZ CLUB RECORDS
VINYL RELEASE DATE: 10/20/2023
ORIGINAL RELEASE DATE: 02/06/1998
VARIANT: Ultra Clear Vinyl 2LP
To celebrate the albumās 25-year anniversary, The Jesus And Mary Chain are reissuing their long-sold-out sixth studio album āMunkiā. Out October 20th 2023 on Fuzz Club, the reissue arrives on CD and gatefold double LP. The vinyl has been remastered by Pete Maher (The Rolling Stones, Jack White, Liam Gallagher). Originally released June 2nd 1998 on Sub Pop / Creation Records, āMunkiā was ā up until the Mary Chainās reformation in 2007 ā an experimental rockānāroll masterclass turned swan song for the Reid brothers, whose fractious in-fighting culminated in the bandās break-up less than a year after its release. It was perhaps fitting, then, that āMunkiā is argued by some as the definitive Mary Chain record in the way it seemed to chart the full array of musical directions the band had ploughed over the five records that came before.
The decision to bookend the album with Jimās rousing sing-along āI Love Rock 'N' Rollā and Williamās caustic white-noise anthem āI Hate Rock 'N' Rollā perfectly captures the two-fold tension at the heart of the Mary Chain at that time ā a tension between noise and melody, and warring brothers. Across the albumās 17 tracks and 70-minute running time, there are the expected abrasive noise-rock epics āCracking Upā and āDegenerateā by way of fuzzed-out pop hits like āFizzyā and the tender acoustic slow-burner āNever Understoodā. Between the Reidās Glaswegian snarls and unapologetically insolent lyrics ā "I'm a mean motherf*cker now, but I once was coolā, āMcDonaldās is sh*t!ā, āChildren are fools!ā being just a few lyrical highlights ā āMunkiā also features two great guest appearances. Mazzy Starās Hope Sandoval returns for another Mary Chain duet on āPerfumeā, which has a swagger thatās equal parts menacing and bittersweet, and the Reidās younger sister Linda (Sister Vanilla) sings beautifully on top of āMoe Tuckerās motorik proto-punk scuzz.
This exclusive 2LP vinyl variant is on āUltra Clearā and limited to only 500 copies, so order yours today!
