Haunting the Chapel was a pivotal release for Slayer. Arriving between their first two records, Show No Mercy and Hell Awaits, respectively, these three songs captured a significant level-up in their technical abilities, ushering in Slayer as they’d be known in the following years. Opener, “Chemical Warfare,” in particular is a ravishing dose of thrash, locking into their unrelenting speed and shredding atop it all with the maniacal glee of a demon in a torture chamber.
